OUTLINE:
Preparation in Heb 1:3
The writer’s setting them up to teach them and encourage them about the priesthood and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which comes later on in this letter. (i.e.- Heb 10:10-14)
Why the Need for “Purification”?
The Bible says we’re totally depraved and wretched (Ro 7:24, Eph 2:1-3, 1Ti 6:5), not kind of, or partly, impure. Thus the need for our magnificent Savior to make “purification for sins” (Heb 1:3)!
JN 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
In God’s Salvific Plan…
…God does all the work!!
(Jn 3:16,19:30, Eph 2:4-10)
Meeter on Heb 1:3
– from Heavenly High Priesthood
“The purification of the people was similarly achieved by blood in an act of expiation [satisfaction of God’s justice] (cf. Lev 16:30). Purity is the essential condition for participation in the cultic life. The defilement of sin erects a barrier to the approach to God which must be removed.”
Lev 16:30
For on this day shall atonement be made for you to cleanse you. You shall be clean before the LORD from all your sins.
Jude 24-25
Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
