TODAY’S VERSE:
Luke 12:34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
We discussed recently in prep school how right priorities lead to making right decisions and wrong priorities lead to making wrong decisions. Any time mankind chooses his will over God’s will, his priorities are wrong and the decisions made based on these priorities are wrong, resulting in sin.
We see it in the Garden of Eden with the first two people:
Genesis 2:17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.
Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
Clearly their priority was not to obey God, but rather to fulfill their own desires. There was a penalty for that sin:
Genesis 3:23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
We see it in the world today as people choose anything and everything over the Lord. God promises:
Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you .
The kids in prep school all agreed that the majority of people do not obey this, but instead choose to spend their time on things like social media, video games, T.V., and working long hours in order to buy more “stuff”. What the world tells us to treasure and make a priority is not what God tells us to treasure and make a priority. There is a penalty for seeking the world’s treasure instead of God’s.
Galatians 6:7-8 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
We also see this when it comes to the Good News:
1 Timothy 2:3 This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Many, many people reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Their priorities, again, are wrong leading to the wrong decision of rejecting our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. There is a penalty for this sin, as well, and it is an eternal one:
2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power
What you focus on and spend your time on in this life is what you “treasure”. If it is something other than the Lord and His Word, you are disobeying His commands and headed for “destruction” in your life and, for the unbelievers, all of eternity.
